Flounder Fish
About Flounder :
Flounder is a flat fish most often found in the Northern Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. These fish have many species. These flatfish belong to the popular families namely the Pleuronectidae, Paralichthyidae, Bothidae, and Achiropsettidae. Flounders are differentiated on the basis of the location of their eyes and color. They are found in different sizes. They usually grow from (12.5 to 37.5) in length but can sometimes grow up to a size of 60 cm in length. Flounders are found hiding on the sea floor.
Flounder Food and Habitat :
Most of these fish likes to live in warm water but few of them are also found in arctic waters. They are often found in the shallow waters along the coast. These fish are choosy in their food. They feed on small fishes, polychaetes, crustaceans and fish spawns.
Flounder Predators :
As they are secretive in nature, they are rarely found by their predators. There are many predators of the flounder. They are large fish, sharks are like sandbar shark, eels, humans, and few more marine mammals are like pinniped.
Flounder Physical Transformation :
A flounder fish undergoes some unusual transformation in its structure in its lifetime. It has an eye on one side of its head when the egg hatches. Then slowly the other eye grows on the other side. Other than these many other complicated changes occur in the nervous and digestive system of this fish. Some of the changes in the muscles and bones are visible too.
Flounder Breeding :
Flounder’s spawning occurs during the hotter months of the year in these species. At the time of breeding, some of the species migrate from deeper waters to the coastal breeding grounds and some others move along the coast to their preferred spawning site. The eggs which are being laid float in water as it has a small oil bubble present in every egg. When the eggs hatch, the tiny creatures appear with eyes on any one side of their head. The newborns fish feed on plankton and crustaceans. And when they grow to an adult they move towards the bottom finally where they exist normally.
Flounder Fishing :
It’s not very hard to catch this fish. But one should have the knowledge about these flounder fishes. A proper technique and skill is required to catch this fish. It is often caught at the bottom of the Ocean as it spends most of its time lying on the Ocean floor. There are few more ways of catching these fish such as spearing or gigging but it can be useful only for the top dwelling flounder fish. One has to be careful while removing the hook from the mouth of these flounder fish because it has sharp teeth, which may give injury.
