Sablefish
About Sable fish :
Sablefish is one of the members of the fish family Anoplopomatidae. Its scientific name is Anoplopoma fimbria. Sometimes they are called a black cod, but it is not a cod species. The long-lived sablefish is very popular in Japan, where it is marketed at high rate. This fish gives oil rich in vitamins A and D. They are sleek and black-skinned fish from the deep waters of the North Pacific Ocean.
Physical features :
Sablefish is also known as black cod or butterfish in many region, but the fact is, it is not a part of the cod family. It can grow to a record of 4 feet or 122 cm. There have been records of their lives for about 75 years old. Sablefish has a white meat, with large flake, high oil content rich in vitamin A and D and a sweet flavor. The sablefish can live for an incredible amount of time. In fact, there have been some found to be over 75 years old.
Habitat :
Sablefish are generally found in muddy seabeds and in deep, cold water in the North Pacific Ocean. They are found at depths of 300 to 2,700 m.
Diet :
They are preying fish so they consume other, smaller fish. They usually feed on walleye Pollock, eulachon, sand lance, herring etc. They also feed on jelly fish and squid.
Different names of Sable fish :
The sablefish is a fish that are known by many names. It has a different name in every country, wherever it is consumed. Mostly in English-speaking countries, the sablefish has around eight names. In the United States, sablefish is known as butterfish. Australians people also refer them as butterfish. In the United Kingdom, they refer them as black cod, or candlefish. In Canada, they refer sablefish as coal-fish.

Sablefish, when prepared without much oil is considered a very healthy food as, it has high oil content. It contains omega three fatty acids, which are very useful to over all health and it is believed by many that it improves the symptoms of people suffering with cardiovascular disease. They have been found to be low in mercury. This is very important to note as many people who consume fish are worried about the levels of mercury that they are consuming.
